Painshill Park Pergola

Our client Painshill Park is a Grade 1 listed landscape charity based in Surrey which prides itself in their natural beauty with unusual twists. When working through the design process they wanted to create a space that highlighted harmony whilst allowing their visitors to reflect and experience true happiness. Based in their Kitchen garden, their intention was to champion the term ‘in memory’ by allowing donors to add engravings to the decorative leaves around the bottom of the pergola, which adds a distinctive character and history to the metal artwork whilst allowing visitors to commemorate their loved ones..

The design incorporates 14 bunches of grapes, 60 leaves, and vines which crawl up the legs and along the tops and sides of the Pergola, with detachable leaves also featured for engraving purposes. During this project we were able to utilise a mix of mild steel and stainless steel to ensure that the finished product would be practical, with stainless steel being more durable, the detachable leaves will be able to withstand the general wear and pressure of the engraving process. As well as this, the pieces recieved a galvanized finish which involves dipping the steel in molten zinc, during this process a bonded coating is formed which ultimately protects the steel from harsh environments and is widely used for corrosion resistance. All of our work utilizing a Galvanized finish has a 50-year warranty against rusting.

During the manafacturing and installation process we were able to showcase traditional Blacksmith techniques, with the production of the leaves taking form through forging with both handheld tools and an anvil. Alongside this, the grapes were fixed to the pergola through the welding process, ensuring that they are cleaned back so that the finished product is seamless. As a result, this design is sure to be eye-caching and a definite talking point once the Pergola fills out with more leaves, solidifying the historical culture of the venue and it’s donors for years to come.
